Shelby, Carmine and "Friends" Present Evening of Music

Over 60 persons gathered in the sanctuary of Good Shepherd Church to hear a diversified evening of music presented by Shelby Batchelor and Carmine Pernini with a group of their "friends". The musical recital was a gift by Shelby and Carmine to the Little Lambs of the Good Shepherd prior to their departure at the end of August for graduate school, Yale Divinity School for Shelby, sponsored by the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, and Hartt Conservatory for Carmine. Shelby, a 2001 graduate from Yale College with a B.A. in Film Studies, showed her versatility by playing duets with Carmine on the flute, cello and piano, while Carmine, a graduate of Monmouth University with a B.S. in performance on the Double Bass, showed his skill on his major instrument with several solo per- formances. The program ranged from J. S. Bach to Erik Satie and delighted the audience with some old famil- iar pieces such as the "Ode to Joy" (Beethoven), "Ave Maria" (Bach/Gounod), "Reverie" (Debussy), "Jesu Meine Freude" (Bach), "Panis Angelicus" (Frank) and others. One highlight of the recital was a surprise appearance by Pastor David Lauder showing a surprising artistry on the oboe. The audience showed their appreciation to his several appearances with generous applause. Other "Friends" participating in the recital were Pat Miller (piano), Miae Park (organ), Steve Miller (hand bells) and altos - Shelby Batchelor, Lori Beck, Corlee Louder, Ellen Tehve - sopranos - Barbara Benson, Maryann Klemmer, Pat Miller.

The final selection of the evening was "Domine Deus" from the "Lutheran Mass in G Major" by J. S. Bach. The ensemble of women's voices, piano, organ, oboe and bass, resulted in a most pleasng and beautiful combination and should be presented again as a part of a worship service. Kudos to the "friends" who took part in the "Domine Deus". Following the recital, a reception was held in Frank Hall, provided by the Fellowship Committee. Almost $1,200 was presented to the Little Lambs of the Good Shepherd Pre-school as a result of the night of music.
